Outpost 186 is pleased to present LIFE IS GREEN, the second solo exhibition of Ariel Danielle Norris. Norris has worked within the canonical genre of photo realism in order to question the universalism of the photo-fiction. She pulls abstraction, montage, cartoons, and expressionistic styles back into the frame, while delicately sustaining a suspension of disbelief inherent to the photographic. Her paintings weave together autobiographical narratives and portraits with literary, pop culture and art historical themes.  Focusing on the “fini” of the painting surface, as and allegory for the camera flash, she blurs lines of illusionary and indexical representation and renders a personal poesis into the genres.

Ariel Danielle Norris (b. 1991, Georgia)  Grew up in the Southern Appalachia, then relocated to Boston for college. She graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in 2014, and while enrolled there attended the Yale Norfolk Painting residency.  She now lives and works in Hudson, NY.

9pm Bi TYRANT - Brittany Anjou - vocals/piano, Laura Cromwell - drums, Slamber Slusser - bass, Valerie Vetere - guitar Viva DeConcini - guitar

To witness Bi TYRANT live is to watch the patriarchy crack. An all-woman/gnb experi-metal jazz punk band from Brooklyn built with guitars, drums, bass and vocals, lead by frontwoman Brittany Anjou, Bi TYRANT members toured and recorded in The Shaggs and The Dot Wiggin Band before forming in New York in 2014 and releasing their debut album "Bisexual Tyrant" in 2016. In summer 2018, the band kicked off #TheMensesTour in the US. Armed with singles "Fuck Donald Trump," "Fuck U Psychobitch Pro-lifers," and "The Vagina Song" was selected as the soundtrack to Vagilante, the documentary film about the 2017 Women's March. They were selected artists at NYC Winter Jazz Festival, in which they recreated their punk album with an all-woman jazz octet featuring "The Uterus Has a Master Plan," and the #Clibretto, addressing gender equality in jazz, titled "How Many Women are in Your Band?"

Bi TYRANT - Fuck Donald Trump (Official Animated Video)

"In these tense times, Bi Tyrant is my savior. It's at once an outlet for my election anxiety/feminist rage, and a fun, campy, ridiculous distraction." - Lauren A., Maine

"Bi TYRANT sounds like Cinderella shoved a broken glass slipper down G.G. Allin's throat." - Nick Didkovsky, Vomit Fist "Brittany Anjou is one of my favorite NYC musicians. Up until this project, I'd only every seen her play beautiful piano in really controlled settings. This is the opposite of that. This record is very very explicit- sexually and otherwise. Also, disturbing. Also, I'm really really enjoying it. If you're into out stuff- check it out!" - Michael F., NYC "Mike Patton would cry if he saw Bi TYRANT live." - kindred spirit audience member at The Saint, Asbury Park, NJ "Don't ever start a band." - Madame President Viva DeConcini

Leap of Faith - Categories of Being and Their Relations

In the long history of Leap of Faith we have performed in dozens of configurations ranging from 20 plus improvising orchestra to duet with just PEK (clarinets, saxophones & double reeds) and Glynis Lomon (cello, aquasonic, voice) on a few occasions.  We performed with this duet a few times in the early period (90s & early 00s), but only once in the contemporary period since 2015 – a fifteen minute improvisation at the May 5th Third Life Leap of Faith Orchestra & Sub-Units performance.

When deciding what group to bring to the July 21st Outpost 186 set, I decided it was time to do a full length duet set…Come and check us out!

Bostonian Corey Hales has an unexpected voice considering his style and stature. Hailing from just outside of Boston in Milton MA, Corey has been working on his vocal performance since he was 18 months old, and at the young age of 20 he has already established himself as a promising up and coming artist in the Boston area. Corey's vocal coach Mark Baxter has coached some of the greatest voices in American music including the great Steven Tyler. Corey has had wild success in his short time pursuing gigs, securing four residencies, including one at the renowned Harlem Nights in New York.
Talia Rubenstein is guitarist and composer from Boston, USA. She divides her time playing jazz and solo acoustic guitar, and combines the two styles to create a unique and melodic sound. Talia works as a freelance guitarist in both Boston and NYC, though she has played a wide range of venues outside of the USA from township schools in South Africa to the Duc De Lombards in Paris. She will also be performing for the Belize International Jazz Festival this June.
