Harvey Diamond Trio

Harvey Diamond – piano / Jon Dreyer – bass / Miki Matsuki - drums

The legendary jazz pianist Harvey Diamond has graced the Boston area for decades with his music which is at once both deeply technical and deeply emotional to even the most casual listener. Harvey, a protégé of the great Lennie Tristano, has performed with Sheila Jordan, Art Farmer, Charles Neville and many others. After decades of patience by his fans, he has finally released his first CD as a leader, The Harvey Diamond Trio.

Bassist Jon Dreyer, a student of Harvey Diamond, has become one of his closest collaborators. He also performs regularly with James Merenda, both as a member of his band TickleJuice and also in more mainstream jazz settings, and has performed with most of the Boston jazz community, including Adam Janjigian, Yoko Miwa, Frank Wilkins, Joe Hunt and Steve Langone.

Drummer Miki Matsuki moved to the United States to study jazz at Berklee College of Music in 1996. Miki’s band received the title ‘Best of Berklee’ in 2000. Thereafter, Miki received a full scholarship to The Longy School Of Music, where she graduated with her MM and GPD in Modern American Music Performance with honors. Since then, Miki has performed and recorded in various musical settings, including performances through radio and TV broadcasting, a musical tour of Korea, and soundtrack work. Miki has performed with many great musicians, including Wynton Marsalis, Joanne Brackeen, George Garzone, John Tchicai, Darren Barrett, Frank Lacy, Cecil Brooks, Dave Bryant, Stan Strickland and many others.

There will be no set list and no charts. Anything can happen. Listen to what Warne Marsh called "the spontaneous creation of beauty."

Çeşni Trio - Original music inspired by the Ottoman Art Music Tradition

Tev Stevig - tanbur, 7-string fretless guitar, saz, oud

Michael Harrist - contrabass, yayli tanbur, ney

Fabio Pirozzolo - darbuka, bendir, cajon, tombak, armenian dhol

We've been playing out a fair amount this fall and winter. We're looking forward to continuing the monthly series at Outpost and keeping the music moving and growing.

At turns romantic and elegant, vivacious and playful, the music of Çeşni Trio is grounded in the flavors (çeşniler) of Turkish makam music while remaining deeply personal and contemporary. The ensemble guides the listener from dove-tailing contemplative melodies to odd-metered tunes that throw caution to the wind. A well placed breath opens the ceiling, an evocative ornament opens the heart.

Stevig and Harrist first met in Istanbul in 2010. Back home in Boston, MA they found themselves playing and studying Ottoman art music together in Orkestra Marhaba. As an idea for a trio began to take hold, the group found kinship with Pirozzolo and Çeşni Trio was born.

A modal music tradition, Türk sanat müziği (Turkish art music) developed in the urban areas of the Ottoman Empire and has a history of over 500 years. The tradition includes a wide range of repertoire, composers, and practitioners. Çeşni Trio draws from this great tradition and the more modern stylings of contemporary musician-composers such as Erkan Oğur, Ross Daly, Murat Aydemir, and Efrén López.

Aryeh Kobrinsky's solo set has developed out of working on alternate tunings for the instrument. Two years ago, he converted to tuning in 5ths (octave below cello) as opposed to the standard 4ths. This set is an exploration of the new sounds, timbres and harmonic possibilities that have developed out of the new tuning.
