Videos from previous events can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/Tobenfeld These are low-key events -- something between a workshop and a performance.

“Dostoievskian” Buenos Aires:

Russian Literature Translation and its influence on the Argentine Avant-Garde

by Adel Faitaninho

In the process of reexamining the footprint that 19th-century Russian literature left on Latin American writers, I have found that translation is both the bridge between the two continents and the very material out of which a culture and national identity is built. Claridad, one of the major publishers of Russian literary translations, played a key role in shaping the publishing market in Argentina, as well as in the construction of Argentine ideological and cultural thought during the first half of the 20th century. This talk is part of an attempt to trace the path that Russian realism took in the hands of the Argentine Left by analyzing the publisher’s choice of Russian literary works to be translated into Spanish and examining the shifts that reflected political and cultural changes in Argentina, the Soviet Union, and Europe.

Adel Faitaninho is a doctoral candidate in Hispanic Language and Literatures at Boston University. Her research interests include Latin American and Brazilian Twentieth Century Literature, Avant-Garde Literature and Arts in Spain, Brazil, and Argentina, Cultural Dialogues between Latin America and the Soviet Union, and Literary Translation. She translated Jennifer Haigh’s short story “Sublimation” into Russian which was part of a Boston Book Festival project, Jacques Fux’s short story “Perelman: the Bartleby of Mathematics” from Portuguese into English. Adel is currently working on a Russian translation of Fux’s novel Anti-terápias.

notloB Music presents

Ellie & Sumaia | Jenna & Mairi

 Ellie & Sumaia

As long-time friends from their studies at Berklee College of Music, Ellie Buckland and Sumaia Jackson explore their mutual love of songs with accompaniment of guitar and fiddle. To this new project, both musicians bring backgrounds in American Old Time Appalachian music as well as Bluegrass and Celtic fiddle styles.  Stemming from these influences comes Ellie's original songs, complemented by Sumaia's engaging and lyrical fiddle playing. As a duo, their delicate interpretation of songs demonstrate a deep understanding of the melodic and rhythmic aspects of traditional roots music while blending elements of contemporary sound.
Jenna & Mairi
Rooted in traditional Scottish and Appalachian Old-Time music, Jenna and Mairi have developed a sound which celebrates and explores beautiful melodies. The pair met whilst studying at Berklee College of Music and are a product of the thriving and rich Boston music community. Jenna and Mairi have both been heavily steeped in tradition, but their arrangements push boundaries with original compositions and breathe new life into old tunes.
