CURRENT SHOW:     CHLOE WILWERDING - opening: Saturday 24 October, 2pm

With his proclamation of God’s death, Nietzsche untethered man from his consistent source of sublimity, community, comfort, and awe. Whether Nietzsche’s announcement caused or reflected God’s death, man now blindly gropes through the secularized world in an attempt to recover the transcendent. Chloe Wilwerding shares in this pursuit of metaphysical comfort through her art practice, which functions as a devotional search for an alternative deity to inspire wonder, command belief, and explain humans’ origins. Wilwerding primarily makes prints. Her prints playfully address the serious images and ideas of art history, religion, and philosophy. Wilwerding received her BA in studio art and political science from Middlebury College in 2015. She is originally from Nebraska, but now lives in Somerville, MA.

Randy Ross presents The Chronic Single’s Handbook

"A lot of fun to watch." Four Stars (Winnipeg Free Press)
"Literary" "Funny" "Raw" (DCMetroTheaterArts)
"Sharply funny a quality solo show" (FringeReview, Edinburgh)

The Show: The Chronic Single's Handbook is a one-man show by Randy Ross about a never-married hypochondriac who travels the world looking to change his luck with love. Remember Eat, Pray, Love? This is nothing like it.

The story begins in Boston and goes astray in Greece, South Africa, and Southeast Asia. Along the way, audiences hear the stories "Domination for Dummies" and "One Day at The Curious Finger Body Spa."

Please note: The Chronic Single's Handbook carries content warnings for adult situations, adult language, and more adult situations. (Twice your daily allowance for adult situations.)

The one-hour show has been featured at fringe theater festivals around the U.S., Canada, and in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The Writer/Performer: Randy Ross is a Somerville-based story-teller, writer, and Web consultant. His fiction, humor, and erotica have appeared in The Drum, Black Heart Magazine, Calliope, and other publications. In 2007, Ross took a four-month, solo trip around the world and learned to say in three languages: "Speak English?" "Got Pepto-Bismol?" and "Is this the evacuation helicopter?" The Chronic Single's Handbook was inspired by the trip.

rob chalfen & subconsciouscafe productions presents

Matthew Shipp & Michael Bisio

Matthew Shipp – piano / Michael Bisio - bass

cd release : “The Conduct of Jazz”

Matthew Shipp
“Shipp’s expansive adaptations–dense, emotional, and full of quotes and allusions–successfully walk the fine line of rewarding those familiar with Ellington’s music, while in no way requiring familiarity to appreciate the thought-provoking journeys they create. Much like Ellington, Shipp draws from the world of classical music, leaning towards a modern dissonance that ranges from playful to aggressive. In both cases, the ensuing moments of clarity and familiarity are all the more cathartic thanks to this contrast. Michael Bisio’s almost-telepathic ability to both follow and propel Shipp’s challenging improvisations speaks to their extensive joint experience.”    jazz.org/events/av-147488

Michael Bisio

Michael Bisio invariably astounds audiences with the beauty of his tone and the intensity of his very personal musical language. His music has garnered  4 1/2 stars from DownBeat, Jazz Times states his music "resonates with intelligence, emotional depth and probing virtuosity." Journalist Paul DeBarros in Signal to Noise notes; "For years free improvisers have explored the tactile aspect of performance, in which the nature of the encounter between the player and the instrument becomes the subject of the music itself. Bisio is one of the few musicians that has managed to meld this high-concept sense of physicality with the soulful charge of jazz. His fiddle-high, scraped overtones create a tangled choir that is impossible to resist; his expressiveness with the bow is unmatched. Having whirled the listener into a transportive state, he gently shows them the way out..."
