Daniel Levin + Joe McPhee + Chris Corsano

Dan Levin – cello
Joe McPhee – saxes, trumpet, electronics
Chris Corsano – drums, percussion

“A Concert of Jazz beyond Jazz” (The music and its creative outer limits)

Daniel Levin is ‘one of the outstanding cellists working in the vanguard arena’ – All About Jazz.

Joe McPhee "... His magical take on avant-garde sax remains one of the wonders of the scene. He still has one of the most beautiful tones on the planet, even when he’s reaching for jazz’s outer limits." – Time Out N Y..

Chris Corsano  ‘…seriously one of the most exciting drummers on the planet’ – Adam Richards, indieworkshop.com

Together for the first time in the Boston area, this dynamic, cutting-edge trio is led by the distinctive & creative cellist and  NEC graduate (’01) Daniel Levin - featuring one of the most respected & master saxophonists, composers and thinkers of our era, Joe McPhee - plus the up-and-coming, active and vital drummer Chris Corsano (Boston Hassle 2014).

Daniel Levin : daniel-levin.com  No matter what setting he plays in, cellist Daniel Levin occupies a musical space bordered by many kinds of music, but fully defined by none of them.  European classical music, jazz, microtonal and new music, and European free improvisation all figure prominently.  Born in Burlington, VT., living now in Trumbull, CT., he began playing the cello at age six.  He then graduated with a degree in Jazz Studies from NEC arriving in the New York City jazz scene, now living in CT from where he tours extensively.  Daniel has developed his own unique voice as an improviser, and composer. He has performed and/or recorded with Billy Bang, Borah Bergman, Tim Berne, Anthony Braxton, Gerald Cleaver, Andrew Cyrille, Mark Dresser, Joe Morris, and many others; and a recipient of a 2010 Jerome Foundation award.

Joe McPhee :  joemcphee.com  is a multi-instrumentalist (tenor, alto, soprano, trumpet, electronics), composer, improviser, and theoretician; touring internationally and well known playing with Trio X formed in 1997.  He was born in 1939 in Miami, now in Poughkeepsie, NY, and. began playing the trumpet at the age of 8; later in a U.S. Army band and at the age of 32 after hearing the music of John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, and Albert Ayler he taught himself how to play the saxophone and has played both instruments ever since.  In 1981, he met accordionist and educator Pauline Oliveros, whose theories of “deep listening” strengthened his interests in extended techniques. He also discovered Edward de Bono’s Lateral Thinking: A Textbook of Creativity, concepts for solving problems by “disrupting an apparent sequence and arriving at the solution from another angle; applying this  to his own work in creative improvisation, resulting in the concept of “Po Music, a “process of provocation…to move from one fixed set of ideas in an attempt to discover new ones.”  He is a prolific recording artist over the more than 50 years of his life.

Chris Corsano :  cor-sano.com  Spellbound by freely improvised music in the mid-1990s Chris began a long-standing, high-energy partnership with Paul Flaherty in 1998.  A move from western Massachusetts to the UK in 2005, loving now near Saratoga Springs, N.Y., led Corsano to develop an expanded solo music of his own, incorporating sax reeds, violin strings and bows, pot lids, and everyday items into his drum kit. In Feb. ‘06 he released his first solo recording, The Young Cricketer, and toured extensively throughout Europe, USA, and Japan.  He spent ‘07 and '08 as the drummer on Björk's Volta world tour, all the while weaving in shows and recordings on his days off with the likes of Evan Parker, Virginia Genta, and C. Spencer Yeh. Moving back to the U.S. in ‘09, Corsano returned focus to his own projects, most notably a duo with Michael Flower, Rangda (with Sir Richard Bishop and Ben Chasny) and solo work, now revamped to include synthesizers and contact microphones in addition to his drum set and home-made acoustic instruments.
