Duos & Trios : David Tronzo – guitar + Peter Herbert – bass + Kenji Herbert – guitar (Vienna)

David Tronzo is some kind of mad scientist, having spliced together two completely disparate idioms slide guitar and bebop jazz. On a bad night, he sounds like Duane Allman grafted onto Charlie Parker. On a good night, he’s like nothing you’ve ever heard before.

Peter Herbert has worked with many artists and groups such as the John Abercrombie/Marc Copland Quartet, Bobby Previte's "The Horse", John Clark Octet, Art Farmer and Woody Shaw.

Herbert is also a prolific and versatile composer, mostly commissioned by European orchestras and ensembles. He has written for orchestras, choirs and chamber groups, designed experimental movie soundtracks and incidental music for European avant-garde theatre groups

Kenji Herbert is in demand internationally as a highly versatile and individual voice on the guitar. Born in Vienna, raised in Kobe, Japan, now a resident of New York City, he can be heard in a variety of contexts, in the field of jazz and improvised music, playing indie-rock alongside singer-songwriters, or collaborating with dancers and visual artists in interdisciplinary settings. A graduate of Berklee College of Music, he was an inaugural member of its Global Jazz Institute, where he was mentored by celebrated jazz artists and traveled the world to perform and teach. Projects he is currently involved in include his solo and trio endeavors, the ‘Scruffy Herberts’, the Yuhan Su Group, Jesse and Forever, Quartet Dali among many others.

Asymptote - 3rd Year Launch of Asymptote, online literary journal
Translation in the Academy: Translation Studies and World Literature

Speakers:
Edwin Gentzler, UMass Amherst Translation Studies

Karen Thornber, Harvard Comparative Literature Department and Institute for World Literature

Asymptote:
Asymptote is an exciting new international journal dedicated to literary translation and bringing together in one place the best in contemporary writing. Though a translation may never fully replicate the original in effect (thus our name, “asymptote”: the dotted line on a graph that a mathematical function may tend towards but never reach), it is in itself an act of creation.

Event:

A celebration of Asymptote's third year with a discussion bringing together two major Massachusetts centers focused on world literature and translation: the UMass Amherst translation center and the Institute for World Literature (affiliated with the Harvard Comparative Literature Department). Join us to discuss Asymptote, world literature, literary translation!

Steve Thomas & the Real Incognitos
Steve Thomas & Real Incognito play post-jazz/post-pop. Sonic nuggets for the aural adventurer.

Steve Thomas – compostions, vocals
John Funkhouser - electric keyboards
Greg Loughman – bass, electric bass
Mike Connors - drums

We’re jazz players, but we like/play a lot of other musics too. REAL INCOGNITO investigates some idioms we’re attracted to: reggae, ‘60s soul, Balkan odd meters, N. African gnawa . . . OK, we really just wanna be an oddball, globe-trotting rock ’n’ roll band. Tunes include oblique tributes to heroes Robert Frank and Paul Motian, skewed reflections on dental and skin care, and selections from the TBI/TBD Suite.
