Jamie Dunphy - lute and guitar

Jill Noddin -  soprano

Greg Passler - guitar and bass

This afternoon's program will feature an eclectic mix of music, including Renaissance lute songs, duets, and original compositions.  Jill Noddin is a seasoned performer who has sung with the Chorus Pro Musica and the Boston Philharmonic at Symphony Hall, Jordan Hall and Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center.  Over the past year, she and Jamie Dunphy have presented a series of concerts featuring the music of the great Elizabethan composer John Dowland. Jamie Dunphy and Greg Passler are founding members of the original jazz group Mill City Trio, who released three critically acclaimed CDs and presented numerous concerts in Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey.  This is the first time the three performers have joined forces, and they are excited about the possibilities of this unique collaboration.  One of the highlights of the program is "Iris Song," a Greg Passler composition that Jamie Dunphy will be playing for the first time on lute.  "I'm really intrigued by the idea of playing contemporary music on historic instruments," says Dunphy. "The lute is such an intimate instrument, and it's so well-suited to the introspective nature of Greg's music."

Junk Kitchen Series #13
  ~  Breathless: A Kenny G. Tribute -
Kenny G is considered one of the most controversial figures of American music. By way of smooth jazz, a most polarizing style, he’s pushed the meaning of ‘jazz’ through the boundaries of improvising in a direction that no one could have imagined. This night's selections of his catalog will be performed in ways he never could imagine.

Steve Thomas & the Real Incognitos
Steve Thomas – compositions, vocals
John Funkhouser - electric keyboards
Greg Loughman – bass, electric bass
Mike Connors - drums

We're all jazz players, but we love/play a lot of other musics too. REAL INCOGNITO rummages around, disguised as an electric pop band, in some other idioms we're attracted to—reggae, '60s soul, Balkan odd meters, N. African gnawa, yadda yadda yadda. Tunes include oblique tributes to heroes Robert Frank and Paul Motian, skewed reflections on dental/skin care and human frailty, and selections from the TBI/TBD Suite. STEVE THOMAS is a Somerville jazz vocalist/composer who's managed to rope pals John, Mike, and Greg into playing his not-jazz tunes. JOHN FUNKHOUSER (John Funkhouser Trio), MIKE CONNORS (Sonic Explorers), and GREG LOUGHMAN (Lowman) lead their own bands and are in great demand as sidemen on the local and national music scenes. Unlike lesser mortals, they do not seem to require sleep.
