The Scandanavian Cultural Center presents

(reading in Swedish)
During the past 15 years, Sweden has experienced a poetic revival. Influenced by American slam poetry among other artistic forces, a generation of young poets is creating new forms and languages, blending poetry with rap, performance art, stand-up comedy and modern theater.

Some of the influential names in this wave are Henry Bowers, Laura Wihlborg, Henrik Karlsson, and Niklas Mesaros. Together, they are now performing in the U.S. on a short tour that will take them to New York City, Washington, D.C., and Boston.

Bowers is best known internationally as one of the world’s foremost battle-rappers. He has long been a celebrated poet in Sweden, and has recently translated a collection of Tom Waits songs for the musical Gud har annat för sig (God’s Away on Business).

Wihlborg’s performances blur the boundaries between poetry and sound art. In 2009, she was named “best poetry act” at the Berlin International Literary Festival.

Karlsson and Mesaros are both members of the spoken-word collective Krigstribunalen. By blending street art, performance art, social commentary, and music, they have brought poetry into new spaces, ranging from stand-up clubs to the Royal Dramatic Theatre. Mesaros currently holds the title of national champion in slam poetry.

This is the first time poets from this new wave can be seen together in the U.S., giving us a taste of this rejuvenated Swedish poetry which can be identified by its polylingualism and experimentalism. This is a unique opportunity for those who are interested in Swedish poetry post-Tranströmer, whose legacy is both honored and seen as a point of departure. It will be a record of how cultural experiences are reflected and translated in today’s international poetic climate.

D'istante3 is a trio of creative improvised music. Collaboration between the three musicians began about five years ago, with their first performance together in NYC at ABC No-Rio, where Siwula is the curator of C.O.M.A. Series. In the time, they performed in several venues all around NYC. Their first CD called "D'istante3" (Slam, 2012), has been considered "a bridge between the U.S. and Italy from the amazing contents" (Vittorio Lo Conte, Music Zoom).

"With interactive familiarity engendered by time, the three easily enmesh unique textures and timbres into a satisfying whole".

"This trio combines forces with solid results...There is a playful and somewhat melodic quality to this even though it is fully improvised. A rarity for most free music"

Luciano and Giancarlo play together on the international jazz scene since 2002. Their music is mainly based on the search for new forms and expressions, related to tradition with a solid jazz background, mixed with folk music, classical forms and free improvisation.
They played with various musicians of the creative area, among the others Barre Phillips, Globe Unity Orchestra, and Blaise Siwula.
Luciano and Giancarlo released also two CDs in duo 'Seven Tales About Standards' (2006) and 'Seven Tales About Standards Vol.2' (2009), for SplascH Records label. Both the CDs have received great reviews internationally. ("Top Ten CDs of the Year" El Intruso Jazz Magazine, "Best Albums of 2009"  All About Jazz Italy).ù
