Dr T
presents
Visual Music
Live
featuring
Dr
T – live video mixing with:
Dave
Bryant – Keys / Neil Leonard – reeds / John Voigt -- bass
Jeremy Van Buskirk -- Electronics
The musicians will play six duets and a quartet, accompanied by my video improvisations. I'm looking forward to playing with John again, I did my first live visual improvs in events led by him in (gulp)
1973. I've performed frequently with Dave and Neil -- this willl be my first time playing with Jeremy.
My projections are produced by mixing multiple DVD sources with a video mixer and effects processor. The sources consist of computer-manipulated original material derived from my still photography and videography. The original subject matter is usually recognizable, but sometimes processed to complete abstraction. Sometimes the projections and music respond directly to each other --
sometimes they simply co-exist.
Many of my finished video pieces (both studio and live) can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/Tobenfeld

Old Time Musketry presents a joyous music that draws on the
exuberant spirit of early jazz, the poignant melodies and soulful grooves of
rock and folk music, the energy and spontaneity of free improvisation, and a
willfully experimental attitude towards combining these elements into a unique
vision of American music. Old Time Musketry joined forces in early 2009 in
Brooklyn and has been developing their unique sound by performing widely in the
New York area and around the Northeast. The band will release their debut album
in the fall of 2012 on Steeplechase Records.

Drag King 101 +Performance is your
opportunity to explore the inner Drag King inside you AND have a chance to
strut your stuff onstage! During
this 6-week intensive we will explore the ins and outs of what makes a
successful Drag King through gender illusion, costuming, physicality, character
creation, acting technique, movement, and story development. This course
culminates with each student creating their own performance piece to showcase
at our Drag King Slam!
The slam event will be held on Tuesday, August 28th at the Midway Cafe in Jamaica Plain!
So, what’s a Drag King again?: Well, perhaps you’ve heard of a Drag Queen? Simply put, a Drag King is the counterpart – a performance critiquing the masculine character in society. The drag culture at large generally injects politics, pop-culture commentary, sexuality, orientation, identity and gender exploration into the center of much of its material… While we each develop our own POV on the art form, we’ll also touch on: Bio Queens and Drag Queens, High Femme Performance, Transgender Identity vs. Gender Performance, Queer and Straight: identity/behavior/orientation, and so much more… This workshop is open to people of all gender identities who are interested in performing as a King.

Jonah Parzen-Johnson presents Michiana
Jonah Parzen-Johnson - solo baritone saxophone
Jonah Parzen-Johnson is a baritone saxophonist living in Brooklyn, NY. Growing up on the South Side of Chicago, Jonah was surrounded and inspired by the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians and South Side music community. Before graduating from high school Jonah had studied under former AACM chairman Mwata Bowden and AACM member Matana Roberts. Under their tutelage he developed a dedicated focus on the essential role of composition in the life of a musician.
Parzen-Johnson moved to New York in 2006. He is a long-time member of Zongo Junction, a Brooklyn based afrobeat ensemble, and a founding member of the collective trio Reed’s Bass Drum. Currently, Jonah can be found performing and workshoping his solo saxophone work, Michiana. If you look hard you might find him performing with the Steve Newcomb Orchestra, Steven Lugerner Dectet, Tiffany Chang’s Free Association, and other friends.
Jonah’s debut solo saxophone album, Michiana, will be released on Primary Records on June 5 2012.
