Saturday 15 December @ Outpost, 7pm - by donation
AN EVENING OF ENTERTAINMENTS from AUGUST STRINDBERG
Swedish playwright August Strindberg's 1889 "quart d'heure" looks deceptively simple. Two women run into one another in a cafe on Christmas eve.  One is married, one is unmarried. Both are actresses. Only one speaks. The scene is barely ten minutes long. But the play activates a series of ambiguous interpretations, turning around the question inherent in the title: who is the stronger?

So, we're going to spend the evening teasing this thing out. Two actresses have learned both roles in a new translation, and will perform one side (or BOTH?!) according to their whims, your whims, or rock-paper-scissors. Following the performance, we will screen Ingmar Bergman's PERSONA, which draws its inspiration from THE STRONGER. Bergman seems to tease Strindberg's characters across 85 minutes of screen time (not to mention Liv Ullman and Bibi Andersson's glorious cheekbones).
In the interest of the contrapuntal of Strindberg's setting, we're throwing the play during the Christmas season. So, when you've finished wrestling for a Tickle-me-Elmo, please come by. We're happy to host a kind of alternative.
Wine. Coffee.

The Olson Pingrey Quartet
Randy Pingrey - trombone, compositions
Kathy Olson - bari sax, compositions
Mark Zaleski - bass
Austin McMahon - drums
The Olson Pingrey Quartet (aka the OPQ) started as a tribute to the subtle and strangely subversive modernism of the Gerry Mulligan/Bob Brookmeyer quartet. We’ve since found something interesting by continuing that tradition.  You’ll find our music to be lighthearted, but never frivolous as well as rigorous, but never academic.  We combine the harmonic freedom of free jazz with the melodic vocabulary of hard bop and the quirky individualism of early swing.  The unique timbre of the bari sax and trombone plus the lack of any chordal instrument really sets us apart from the average modern jazz group.
At this particular performance we'll be premiering some new compositions and arrangements.
You can check out recordings and learn more about the group here:

Ross Wallace Chait - percussion/guitar/loops/objects
Myles Emmons  - double-bass/electronics
Ross Chait + Myles Emmons are a composing and improvising duo of avant-garde music out of Oberlin Ohio.  Working with found objects, electronics and their respective primary instruments (percussion and double bass), the duo attempts to toe the ever-evolving line between atmosphere and abstraction, venturing from stark terrains often cultivated in silence, to wild outbursts of sonic extremities.  Having performed with the likes of Tim Feeney + Vic Rawlings, The EAR Duo and C. Spencer Yeh with releases current and upcoming on ILSE Records and Welcome to the 21st Century, the duo continues to explore via free improvisation, graphic score interpretation and formal composition, how their musical growth will pan out.
"clean dispersed chamber/duo/kitchen/cutlery music[...]a clean cover, clean music, clean body, sponged & quiet[...]gets on with it, no fuss" - pyongyang plastics

Mike Stockbridge
Guitarist Mike Stockbridge
www.mikestockbridge.com

"Just two albums into his recording career and Mike Stockbridge is solidifying his reputation as one of the East Coast's most promising jazz guitarists. Stockbridge's second effort, Ama, jolts the imagination with his inventive and compelling playing. Stockbridge released his self-titled debut in 2009; two years later, Ama finds Stockbridge gaining confidence and focus, creating a work of bold experimentation and stunning precision." - allaboutjazz.com

"Following up on his self-titled 2009 debut, New Hampshire native Mike Stockbridge establishes himself as one of the state’s top jazz guitarists with “Ama.” It’s a breath of fresh, fall air for a largely underserved genre in the area." - The Wire -

"He balances flash with finesse in a totally winning way. If Frank Zappa had started and stayed in jazz, he might sound like Stockbridge." – Michael Witthaus, Hippo Press –
