Darius Jones is an extraordinarily gifted young alto saxophonist and composer; Man'ish Boy (A Raw & Beautiful Thing) is his remarkable debut as a leader. Jones joined the New York music community in 2005, after living and studying in Richmond, VA. In his short time here, he has amazed and inspired musicians and audiences from widely divergent backgrounds with his meticulously honed musical gifts. Soul-power is at his foundation; forward looking expression always at the fore. Some bands Jones currently works with are the Cooper-Moore Trio, Mike Pride's From Bacteria to Boys, William Hooker's Bliss (East), and Trevor Dunn's Proof Readers. Carl Testa/Kevin Frenette Quartet
World renowned master bassist Carl Testa (from Anthony Braxton’s 12+1tet) and Boston's own avant-jazz co-conspirators Kevin Frenette (guitar), James Rohr (piano) and John McLellan (drums) present an evening of improvised music centering on exceptionally intricate interplay, texture and timbre on Saturday, October 22.
Carl Testa is a composer, bassist, bass clarinetist, and electronicist who has been composing and performing creative music since 2000. He is primarily known as one of the members of multi-instrumentalist/composer Anthony Braxton’s Sextet, Septet and 12+1tet. He is featured on the 9 Compositions (Iridium) 2006 box set on Firehouse 12 records, on 12+1tet (Victoriaville) 2007 on Victo Records, as well as the Quartet (GTM) 2006 box set on Important Records. His debut recording as a leader, Uncertainty, features his compositions for clarinets, percussion, string bass, and
electronics, which blends chamber music, free improvisation, jazz, and modern electronic music.
Boston area guitarist Kevin Frenette has performed throughout the Northeast USA making music that is inspired by both avant-garde jazz and contemporary improvisation. He studied guitar, composition, and music theory at UMASS-Dartmouth where he received a BA in Theory/Composition. He has performed and/or recorded with such artists as
Tatsuya Nakatani, Jack Wright, Joe Giardullo, Daniel Levin, Forbes Graham, Luther Gray, Harvey Sorgen and Dan DeChellis. In 2007, Fuller Street Music released Kevin’s first date as a leader: CONNECTIONS. That album featured Frenette with Tatsuya Nakatani on percussion, Andy McWain on piano and Todd Keating on bass.
James Rohr has been playing the piano since the age of 5 and began playing professionally at 14 in New Mexico. In the mid 1990's, James formed a piano trio with Nate McBride on bass and Curt Newton on drums - together they released
three recordings. James has had the honor and privilege of playing with many of the great improvisers in the Boston/NYC area. Currently, James is interested in writing and performing songs with his band, the blue ribbons, which he describes as Ray Charles and Johnny Cash meet Captain Beefheart and Sun Ra.

RAIN PERRY with ANDREW HARDIN
Rain Perry - vocals / Andrew Hardin - guitar
Rain Perry is an award-winning songwriter and author of the autobiographical play "Cinderblock Bookshelves: a Guide for Children of Fame-Obsessed Bohemian Nomads." Her song "Beautiful Tree" is the theme song for the CW Series "Life Unexpected." She is currently finishing work on her third album, "Internal Combustion," with producer Mark Hallman.
She is the Grand Prize winner of both the John Lennon Songwriting Contest (Folk Division) and the ROCKRGRL Discoveries Award, as well as a finalist at the Telluride Troubadour competition. Of her song "Yosemite," cowboy songwriter-poet Tom Russell said, "It slapped my heart around like a good song should," and he recorded it with Nanci Griffith.
In addition to developing her own career as a performing artist, Rain has found herself in the role of concert promoter, producing Agility: a Women's Music Festival to Benefit the Arthritis Foundation in her hometown of Ojai, California. She created, as well, a concert series that has featured some of her favorite troubadour songwriters.
She divides her time between parenting and the lucrative world of independent folk/pop music.
In 2005, Andrew released "Blue Acoustic," a collection of instrumental acoustic guitar duets with songwriters Dave Alvin, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Eliza Gilkyson, and Tom Russell, cowboy singer Don Edwards, and bassist Washtub Jerry. Also available are "Just Like This Train," a collection of vocals and instrumentals from 2002, and a newly remastered "Coney Island Moon," featuring guitar great Albert Lee.
Andrew's guitar style incorporates influences as diverse as Roy Buchanan, Clarence White, Ry Cooder, Gabby Pahinui, and Grady Martin; that is to say it contains elements of blues, rock, R&B, country, tropical, and Spanish-flavored music.
