Hans Poppel's Brief Return: Duos, Trios and Beyond
Hans Poppel - piano / Curt Newton - drums / Jeff Song - cello / Tom Hall - saxophones / Neil Leonard - sax
Pianist Hans Poppel, who lived in the Boston area for many years, moved back to his native Munich in 2008. Hans is back in town in early June; this performance will feature rotating small-group improvisations with some of his frequent local collaborators and others less familar.

Multi talented artist Hans Poppel is originally from Munich, Germany. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and became an assistant set designer at the Bavarian State Opera. Hans has worked as a set designer and award winning book-illustrator. As a pianist of jazz and improvised music, he has developed his own extended piano techniques. He has performed and recorded in Europe and the United States. Hans currently lives and works in Munich. Musical collaborations include performances with Amiri Baraka, Joe Morris, Ken Vandermark, Hans Koch, Peter Schärli, Curt Newton, Soo-Jung Kae, Sebi Tramontana, and others.

François Tusques & Eric Zinman
Pianist François Tusques considered to be the father of French free jazz, will perform two piano concerts with pianist Eric Zinman. These are duets involving two pianos, something rarely available.
Born in 1938 in Paris and raised in Brittany, Tusques was among the first to bring together French musicians to explore a new musical language in the 1960’s. He also formed connections with all the significant American avant garde players who came to Paris at that time. This is a rare opportunity to introduce Mr. Tusques to Boston.

Outpost 186 presents the “Transportive” music of Loop 2.4.3: The New York Percussion Duo, with Eric Dahlman (trumpet, electronics) and special guest Erik Nugent (nu chromatic didjeridoo, throat singing).
Loop 2.4.3 is a composer/performer duo that has drawn comparisons to Steve Reich, Battles, Harry Partch, Moondog, Konono No.1, Brian Eno, and Belle Orchestre - an assortment that alludes to their hard to classify, yet visceral aesthetic. They are composers/instrument inventors/improvisers/performers and “virtuosi musicians of the highest caliber” (Gordon Stout, Ithaca College), mixing electro-acoustic techniques with an array of percussion and other instruments. Their new album, Zodiac Dust, features strings and two instruments of their invention, the Rose Echo and eLog. Their music has been described as "transportive percussion odysseys" (The Boston Phoenix), "taut compositions with a stunning improvisational sense" (Time Out Chicago), and as both "action adventures and reveries... all sound[ing] like part of a well-thought-out tradition, only the tradition has never existed until now." (Milo Miles, Fresh Air - NPR)
Boston-based trumpeter, and frequent Outpost performer, Eric Dahlman joins the bill with his ambient tribal soundscapes anchored by clouds of trumpets featuring new Antarctican inspired music, solo Trident trumpet and solo prototype chromatic didj and throat singing performed by Erik Nugent plus duo improvs and tribal drones with Eric and Erik.
